About the Samaritan House

For over 40 years, the Samaritian House, Inc. (SHI) has been the sole provider of shelter in Virginia Beach for families experiencing homelessness. In 1989, 89% of families utilizing its shelter were fleeing domestic violence, leading SHI to refocus its mission to meet the needs of people experiencing violence while continuing to serve homeless families. In 2016, SHI responded to the invitation by the Attorney General to build a Human Trafficking Task Force collaboratively. SHI expanded its services to become the regional victim service provider for all trafficking victims identified by the task force. The task force jurisdiction extends from Suffolk to the Eastern Shore. “Samaritan House helps people free themselves from domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking, and homelessness.”

Currently, SHI provides a diverse array of voluntary program services, including but not limited to emergency shelter, rapid rehousing, trauma-informed case management, accompanying clients to court, therapeutic services for children, prevention education, and extensive regional partnerships to restore clients to employment, safe/stable housing and self-sufficiency.

This year Virginia DWM is glad to partner with Samaritan House to support their work in providing safe and supportive options for women and families.

Global

Woman to Woman- Kenya

This year’s Global Ministry project is the Woman to Woman trip to Kenya which is set for the fall of 2025.

Kenya is a country in Eastern Africa. According to the 2019 Kenyan census, 85.5% of the population is Christian. However, Kenya continues to be a patriarchal society, and as such Kenyan women and girls face a range of issues including widespread gender-based violence, and limited access to education and employment opportunities among other issues.

The Virginia Disciples Women’s Ministries/CWF is looking forward to learning from the group of Disciple Women after their trip to visit and learn from the women of Kenya.
